2.2- Ingredients for a Hurricane
Teaching Point: Students will be able to identify and define the specific elements needed to form a hurricane.
After experimenting with Create-A-Cane, you have probably noticed some patterns. All Hurricanes need 4 main components to form. These components need to be just right in order for a hurricane to form.
Temperature
In order for a hurricane to form it needs warm water. The temperature of the sea water must be at least 82 degrees farhenheit . Hurricanes will not form over cool water or land.
Wind Shear
The low, mid, and upper level winds need to be moving in the same direction at the same speed in order for a hurricane to form. The wind speed should be light to medium.
Humidity
The lower and middle atmospheric layers need to have very moist air and high humidity in order for a hurricane to form
Perfect Location
Hurricanes form off the coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. Hurricanes form beteween 5 and 30 degrees North in order to form. It needs to be at least 5 degreed north in order to spin because of the coriolis effect. It needs to be below 30 degrees North so that the water is warm enough for hurricane formation.
